Supporting Children with Selective/Situational Mutism (SM)

Understanding the child who speaks freely at home but goes quiet everywhere else.

Live Online| Friday 12 June 2026

10:30am AWST | 2 hours including Q&A Recording available after the event

Some children have so much to say. You see glimpses of it, the stories they tell at home, the questions they ask in the car, the way they light up when they're comfortable. And then they walk into school, or into your clinic room, and the words just don't come. Not because they don't want to. Because their nervous system won't let them.

This is what Selective Mutism looks like. And it is so widely misunderstood.

I've been wanting to bring this topic to our community for a while now, because I know how many of you are sitting with these children in your sessions wondering what to try next. So I'm really glad to be hosting Danielle Cottam, Speech Pathologist and founder of Selective Mutism Western Australia, for this introductory webinar. Danielle works exclusively with children and young people experiencing SM, and she brings close to two decades of experience and genuine passion for getting this right.

This session gives you a solid, practical foundation. You'll come away understanding what SM actually is, what's happening for the child at a nervous system level, and what you can do, across clinical, school, and community settings, to support them without adding to their distress. It's the kind of session that changes how you see these kids. And once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Warmly,

Di
